James Charles Laycock's Obituary
James Charles Laycock passed away from our arms and hearts on January 21, 2002. He was born on April 9, 1912 in Straight Creek, Kentucky. He grew up in Appalachian, Straight Creek and Harlan County, Kentucky. He completed college at Eastern Kentucky State in Mathematics and Education. He then married Mary Elizabeth Chappell, the class math whiz in July 1937. They taught high school and then began a family. At the onset of World War II he became a Statistician on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He retired from Atomic Energy Commission in the 1970's. He and his family moved to California in the late 1960's and started a business; Activity Resources Inc., located in Hayward, California. A company that published modern mathematics books that his wife wrote, manufacturing, and distributing the manipulative material that mathematics course work required. He retired from Atomic Energy Commission to run the growing company. He continued at Activity Resources until his death at age 89.He loved his family and good cigars. He was a master fisherman, and followed Southern Conference Football. He was an expert in the garden and loved his fruit trees, especially his cherries. You could never leave his home whether you were a customer, family, or friend without an armload of some sort of vegetable or fruit.He leaves his widow Mary C. Laycock of Hayward; Sons; Charles Marion Laycock and Don E. Laycock, daughters; Ann L. Chappell, MD, and Jane E. Laycock. Grandchildren; Charles M. Laycock, IV, Matthew D. Laycock, Stephen Laycock, Shawna M. Laycock, Melody K. Pantajja, Jasmine Barisione, Charles E. Chappell, James C. Laycock, II and Jessica Laycock.
