It is very difficult to select just one memory about Hermann which spans over at least 40 years of friendship; there are so many events that bring joy, laughter and tears to our eyes. We loved our trips to Bear Valley where Hermann and Marcia took their time to teach our 3 young sons how to ski down a slope. They would position our boys carefully between their legs, show the boys how to appreciate the sport and laughed all the way down the hill. Hermann gave his time to us, a precious commodity. Our memories of Hermann could never be complete without re-telling our family’s crazy and fun trips to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Nevada. The first time Hermann and Marcia drove to Bonneville with us was in 1986; the National Guard had to fly in and perform an emergency night-time evacuation of the hotel we were staying at because the casino dealers were passing out mysteriously. We found out later that a boiler had ruptured and had been emitting toxic fumes throughout the hotel and casino for several days. We were all waiting and watching the crowds leave the casino but couldn’t see or find Hermann. It turns out that Hermann had to be ‘pried’ away from his slot machine because he had been winning and wasn’t ready to leave it just yet. He was one of the last to leave. He was quite ‘strong-willed’, a character trait that served him well in medicine. The most profound memory we have of Dr. Hermann Bonasch was his expertise in animal surgery.. He was a master at it. He performed a hysterectomy on our Rotties and his stitches were so perfect and carefully closed, we could barely find the sutures on their bellies. Hermann, we love you. You will be missed by our entire family, the animals you have healed and Hermann, you were successful and talented at everything you touched. God bless you. Denny and Cindy Kahler
