HARROLL 'ARKIE' CATHEY HARROLL “ARKIE” CATHEY Age 80, retired carpenter for the City of Oakland, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 3, 2007. He was born August 5, 1926, in Berryville, Arkansas, to Polk and Emma Jane Cathey, the youngest of eight children. In 1939 Harroll’s family moved to California where he met and married Helen Patricia Moore on March 1, 1953. Harroll and Helen originally settled in Fremont, later making San Leandro their permanent home. Harroll worked in the Fremont area as a carpenter, building and remodeling homes and making custom cabinetry alongside his twin brother Carroll. He then went to work for the City of Oakland’s Fire Department and Muni Buildings. Harroll (aka “Arkie”) worked in the carpenter shop, building and repairing ladders for the fire trucks as well as designing custom cabinets. He retired after 22 years. He loved and enjoyed his time with everyone he worked with. After retirement, Harroll enjoyed taking motor home trips, fishing and spending many hours having fun with his grandchildren and his precious dog, Missy. His family loved him very much and will miss Grand-Dad and hearing all his funny rhymes and stories. Harroll is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen; his twin brother, Carroll of Nevada City; his son, Brian of Alameda Fire Department, Brian’s wife Lydia and grandchildren Andrew and Erin of Castro Valley. Family and friends are invited to honor and remember Harroll Cathey. Visitation will be on Monday, January 8, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Graveside Service on Tuesday, January 9, at 12:00 noon at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward.
