Tribute and Memories for Aunt Gloria Schlackman Bruder- From her Niece Elaine Schlackman-LebowitzI hoped Aunt Gloria would live to reach 100 years old – she would have loved being called a centenarian. She treasured the written word in fact and fiction and knew a good read and shared her enthusiasm. Her love of life was evident in all subjects of conversation. I cherish having had the influence of Aunt Gloria over the years to this day. Even when she could no longer read the printed word, we sent her a few talking books and she took the time to discuss what she enjoyed, and why. And then passed the story books on to others…. Examples of how she encouraged and inspired me over the years: –Role model for a big sister: Aunt Gloria was a wonderful example; she loved her younger brother, my father Herbert and was like a sister to his wife, my mother Pearl. Whenever I might need some inner guidance on sibling relationships, I think –”What would Aunt Gloria do & say.” –What was important in education and making positive efforts in daily life: In addition to Aunt Gloria’s journalism and English lessons, she added practical skills to help prepare her students for being independent, such as how to keep a checkbook. This showed me that life must balance values with aspirations and apply knowledge with thought and action in the real world. This helps me to this day when guiding visiting doctors at Cedars-Sinai hospital as their Program Coordinator, and other situations in all the complexities of life. –Looking at the family as whole unit while seeing and appreciating the uniqueness that makes-up the individuals in the family: In addition to all our family events and activities growing up with cousins Gene, James and Barbara, it became pertinent when Aunt Gloria knew I was interested in family history, and provided stories and information, along with photos and letters from the family. Her mentoring stoked my interest in genealogy, which opened doors to understanding ancestors, contacting and reaching out to family members, and making new friends. When my mother and father decided it was time to leave New York City and move to Northern California, it was to Dad’s sister Gloria we went. Uncle Alex picked us up at the airport and brought my parents, Herb & Pearl Schlackman, and sister Lois to their home in San Leandro, where Aunt Gloria welcomed us. Later my brothers Evan and Glen joined our extended family in which Aunt Gloria played a pivotal role. I’m sad to lose this wonderful woman from our midst, our dear Aunt Gloria, may her Memory be for a Blessing. 8/8/2018
