George William “Bill” Spesert Apr. 11, 1918 – June 26, 2009 Resident of Reno, NV George William “Bill” Spesert passed away in Reno, Nevada on June 26, 2009. Bill was born to George Francis and Nettie Rudolph Spesert in Hollister, CA on April 11, 1918. He was 91 years old. The Spesert family moved to San Leandro when Bill was four years old. He attended San Leandro High School where he was active in a variety of sports including football, basketball and baseball. He graduated in 1936 and attended college at San Jose State. Bill held a variety of jobs with Western Pacific Railroad, Peterbilt, and Oliver Filters in Oakland prior to WW II. With the war looming, he entered the US Army in October of 1941. He spent his first army years in the cavalry, where he was selected for officer training school in 1943. He was then assigned to the US Army Air Corps where he spent a tour of duty as a navigator in B-25 and C-47 aircraft with the 10th Air Force in the China, Burma, and India sector. He returned to the states in 1945 after earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal twice for actions against the enemy. After the war, Bill returned to San Leandro where he met and married Delores Ann Mello in 1948. Bill and Delores spent 61 years together as husband and wife raising two sons. Bill retired from a 35-year career as an engineer and engineering manager with Pacific Telephone in 1983. An avid golfer, Bill played for many years at both the Hayward Golf Course and, after its closing, at Skywest Golf Course. Longtime residents of Hayward, Bill and Delores moved to Reno, NV in 2007 to be close to family. Bill is survived by his wife, Delores; his son Douglas W. Spesert of Van Nuys, CA; son Clinton G. and his wife, Karla (Birchfield) Spesert of Reno, NV. A memorial service will be held on July 20, 2009 at 10:00 AM in the Reflection Chapel at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward, CA.
