George Lee Smith's Obituary
George Lee Smith, 96, went to be with the Lord Friday morning at the Cypress Meadows Retirement Center in Antioch, CA.George was a native of Ft. Valley, Georgia. He and his wife, Gertrude, moved to Menlo Park, California in 1972 after spending 41 years in the field of education in Texas. The Lord God took George from the cotton fields of Georgia to become the Dean of the School of Agriculture of Prairie View A & M University in Texas.During his life's journey, earned a B.S. degree from Hampton Institute in Virginia, Married Gertrude and started a family, earned an M.S. degree in Poultry Science from Kansas State University, performed the first surgery on a chicken so that it laid an egg with a note in it, became Dean of Agriculture at Prairie View A & M, helped found Booker T. Washington Institute in the Country of Liberia and received Doctorate degree from the University of Liberia in Monrovia, Liberia. But most importantly, he had asked the Lord Jesus to come into his heart and to be his Lord and Savior, and served in numerous positions in the church.Among his many interests were, gardening, investing, writing plays, watching boxing, playing dominoes, and volunteering at the Onetta Harris Senior Center and the Stanford Hospital in the City of Palo Alto, California. George and Gertrude were avid members of the S.F. Bay Chapter of the Hampton Alumni Association.He is survived by his son, Wendell and wife, Ethel Lee Smith; daughter-in-law, Christine Smith; grandchildren, Deborah Smith-Brannon, George Smith III, Reginald Smith Jr., Corinna Smith, and Marcus Smith; eleven great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; cousins; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude; son, George Jr. and grandsons, Paul and Kevin.The family prefers that contributions be sent to Feed the Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101-9989.A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 11, 2002 at the Chapel of the Chimes, Reflection Chapel located at 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA.
