George Lopes' Obituary
George Lopes age 93 of Fremont, California passed away in the early morning hours of June 22.
At age 16, George joined the Merchant Marines and then was drafted into the Army in 1951 serving for two years. Upon his return home he got a job working as a mechanic for Continental Can Company. He worked there for 25 years until the plant closed. He retired in his early 60’s after working at Christy Concrete in Newark. Being a life time member of the Moose Club in Newark, he spent many hours there hanging out with his buddies until the club in Newark closed its doors.
He enjoyed golfing for many years as well as fishing and playing board games – Monopoly being a favorite. He had a keen sense of direction and drove up until a few weeks before his death. His great sense of humor will be missed but always remembered.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Victor (2017) and Eddie (2019), as well as, all of his siblings: Elaine, Alfred, Mary, Geraldine and Walter.
He is survived by his daughter, Debbie (Andy) Toivola; his daughter-in-law, Hazel (Eddie) Lopes; his four grandchildren, Julie (Phearom) Chham; Troy (Ellen) Toivola; Twins Dwayne and Daryl Lopes; his four great-grandchildren, Serena, Alena and Moses Chham and Carlie Toivola; his friends, Lorraine Herman and Joanne Stager as well has many nieces and nephews.
A Grave Side Service is being held on Monday, August 15 at 1:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, CA.
