GEORGE FRANCIS HOLLAND GEORGE FRANCIS HOLLAND Born: February 15, 1932 in Biloxi, MS. Laid to Rest: November 3, 2006 in Fremont, CA Mr. Holland passed peacefully in his sleep at home. He was a devout, loving and proud husband, father, family man and a true patriot. He will be deeply missed. George served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954, including a tour in the Korean War aboard the USS Jupiter and a long assignment at Naval Air Station, Moffett Field, CA. He was extremely proud of his service to his country. While playing softball for his Navy squadron, VR15, he met his wife, Mary Rita “Rita” who was with her girlfriend watching the sailors play softball. George and Rita were married on May 22, 1954 and had two sons, Steven in 1958 and Duane in 1960. He lived in the Fremont community for 52 years. George coached and managed his son, Steven, in youth sports including Little League baseball and supported his high school football team at American High School as a member of the AHS Booster Club. He loved the outdoors including hunting with his brothers and nephews in Mississippi, or frequent family fishing trips to Lake Camanche and others in northern California. Mr. Holland’s professional career spanned 30 years of dedicated service at Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., Inc. in Sunnyvale, CA – including 28.5 years supporting Special Programs as a Metrologist. After his retirement in 1988, Mr. Holland was the President of the Board at the Fremont Senior Center. He enjoyed serving on the board, and helping seniors within the community, as well as participating in social activities. He played harmonica with the Fremont Senior Sweetharps, participated in bingo, card games and shot a tough game of pool at the center. In 2005, he moved to the Carlton Plaza Assisted Living Community in Fremont, where he was a contributing member of the tenants association, and the local Veteran Foreign Wars, Post 7636 in Hayward, CA. He was predeceased by his loving wife Mary Rita Holland of 49 years in 2003 and his son, Duane Michael Holland, Age 10 in 1970. Mr. Holland is survived by his loving son, Steven Francis Holland; Daughter-in-law, Charlotte; and three grandchildren: John, Christopher and Aimee of Ashburn, Virginia; two brothers: Gilbert, William, a sister: Carol Broussard, several nephews all of Biloxi, MS and several dear friends, Robert and Nancy Hackbarth, Jon and Mary Biggs, Mary Newmann, Cherry Sakakida and Glenn Davis. A memorial service is planned for Veteran’s Day, November 9, 2006, at the Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, CA at 1:30PM. Internment will follow in Biloxi, MS at a later date.
