He was raised in Oakland, attending Redwood Heights Elementary, Bret Harte Junior High, and Fremont High School. After graduating high school, George enlisted in the Marines. When he returned home in 1948, he met Elizabeth Jane Rodgers, marrying in 1949. They had two children, George Michael and Linda Sue. They were happily married for 40 years.
In 1951, George joined the Oakland Fire Department, working there until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement he and Jane renovated and then lived in his family cabin in Camp Meeker until her passing in 1989.
At a high school reunion, he became acquainted with Karyl Clendenen, a former classmate, and in 1994, they married. They had been married for 29 years. He was a loving and devoted caregiver to Karyl, for the past several years, who survives him.
George was an avid hunter, bowler and carpenter. He built his home in Oakland where he and Jane raised their family. He enjoyed entertaining and had a very quick wit and immense knowledge of any number of subjects. He travelled immensely and always had great stories to tell.
