Floyd Herman Seymour's Obituary
Floyd Herman Seymour Dec. 8, 1924 – Sept. 22,2009 Resident of Newark Born in Maywood IL, Floyd passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 84. Raised in Rylander WI, he moved to California at the age of 12. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a part of the 594th engineer boat shore regiment based in Monterey. In 1943 he married his beloved Florence. In his early years he drove a bread truck and ran a janitorial service. For fifty years he dedicated his efforts to the electrical distribution field working for major distributors such as CEO in San Jose, Independent Electric in Sunnyvale and Fremont and Eldridge Electric in Hayward. Floyd was a very devoted father taking a very active role with his children, even as a “room mother” but especially enjoyed playing Santa Claus for all the children at Newark’s First Fire Station and later for many years in numerous other venues. Very active in the community, Floyd worked on the campaign for the first mayor of Newark, George Silliman. He was also involved with the Flea Market that raised funds for the computer lab at the Newark Senior Center which was named in his honor. He was very involved in the Food Drives for the Senior Center , was president of the Newark Chapter of the AARP, and served as peer counselor for the Tri-Cities area. Floyd received numerous certificates of appreciation for the generous dedication of his time and served as VP of the Tri-Cities Elder Coalition and VP of the Senior Citizens Advisory Board. He received a Citizen of the Year Award in 1969 and later a Volunteer Award in 1998 both from the City of Newark. Known affectionately as “Head Flea” Floyd was passionate about his work with the Flea Market. He was an avid fisherman but will be remembered most as a loyal friend, cherished by all and loved by many. Floyd is survived by his daughter Linda Seymour Likarich of Newark, granddaughter Melinda Torgersen (Eric) of Brentwood and five great-grandchildren; Cameron, Tyler, Mason, Landon and Trinity. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Florence and his son Bruce.
