Florence Mae Lang's Obituary
Florence was born February 3, 1925 in Oakland, California to Otto and Irene Goodrich.She passed away at The Commons Assisted Living in Manteca on December 20, 2016.We would like to thank the Commons Memory Care, Optimal Hospice Care and staff for taking such good care of Mom.Florence lived in Oakland and later moved to Walnut Creek with her parents and four siblings. After graduating from Acalanes High, Florence started working at the 6th Street Market in Oakland, where she met the love of her life, Ernie Lang. She married Ernie in 1943 before he was shipped overseas to Germany during WWII.Florence continued to work for the 6th Street Market at the lunch counter until she became pregnant. At that time she was transferred to work in their office. After the birth of Ernie Jr., Florence was transferred to work in the Grocery Department becoming the first female Grocery Cashier. Florence was hired to work part-time as a cashier for P & X Foods. She worked approximately 30 years as a retail clerk. Macular Degeneration caused her to take an early retirement.In 1945, Ernie returned home from the war and they bought their first home in Hayward. Florence and Ernie bought their second home in Castro Valley, where they raised their four children. After Ernie’s retirement from the grocery business, they moved to Pueblo Creek Mobile Home Park in Hayward. Later they moved to The St. Regis Retirement Center in Hayward.Following Ernie’s death, Florence moved to Livermore and lived with her daughter Sharon. They moved to Manteca, California in November 2012. Later she moved into the Commons Assisted Living in Manteca.Florence had a flair for life. She joined Valks Sorority in 1942 and still remains a member. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed numerous handicrafts. She liked hosting family functions. Florence and Ernie enjoyed camping at Blue Lake. They spent many years at their cabin in Ben Lomond. Later they belonged to an RV group and went on many outings. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and especially winning.She was preceded in death by her wonderful husband of 68 years Ernie, her brother Ernie Goodrich, sisters Grace Marsh, Louise Buswell and Dorothy Mathews. Florence leaves behind her four children: sons, Ernie (Valerie) Lang of Moses Lake, Washington, Michael (Barbara) Lang of Hayward, California, Greg (Kasi) Lang of Phoenix, Arizona and daughter Sharon Tassano of Manteca, California, 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.Florence will remain in our hearts and memory forever.A Celebration of her Life will take place Friday, January 6, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward, California.A reception will be held immediately after the service at the New England Village Club House, 940 New England Village Drive, Hayward, California.In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to Wounded Warriors, Alzheimer’s Association or your favorite charity.
