I just fnisihed this one and I agree with pretty much everything you're saying. I'm not necessarily biased against neglectful mothers, but I really wanted to know more about this one. Why she left, why she agreed to take the girls for the summer, why she helps the Panthers, and so on. The real answers are possibly a little dark for a MG book (Cecile seems to make a reference to wishing she'd gone to Mexico for an abortion rather than have the girls), so maybe I want too much from a MG novel, too. On the other hand, with such complexities hinted at, maybe this would have been more successful with a slightly older narrator and making it YA.##imported-begin##Desmaliia##imported-end##
