On the eve of Taiwanese Father's Day [August 8], my father passed away on August 6 in San Francisco Bay Area, California, at the age of 102.
In 2017, I accompanied my father to visit his hometown Fuzhou, China and attended the wedding of his grand nephew. He was very happy to see many relatives and younger generations. Before flying back to US, relatives invited my father to visit again following year. My father said goodbye to his younger peers in tears, thinking that this might be the last time. In this strange city, my father reunited with his distant hometown after a long absence, it suddenly became the "Olive Tree" in my dream. (n.b. During Taiwan’s martial law period, “Olive Tree” sometimes implied tabooed topic of missing hometown in China after Communist took over the mainland. )
When I was in high school, one night, my father was walking home from a friend Mr. Lin’s house. On the way, he encountered a man who was violently assaulting a woman on a tourist bus stopped by the roadside. My father immediately stepped forward to intervene to free the woman from the predicament. After listening to the father's self-narration, the whole family broke into a cold sweat. Father had always been a man of integrity, and always entertained others with a good laugh. (Mr. Lin Sheng Yin, a family friend, is the father of my schoolmate Lin De Jih.)
When I was in college, my apartment on the second section of Zhongshe Road, Waishuangxi, was broken into by a neighbor’s son who was in high school. My father and I ambushed him and detained him. We called the police and took him to the police station. When his mother rushed to the station, she kneeled down and cried. My father relented and told the police that nothing valuable was lost, and that the teenager only needed to pay for the window, give a record, and get a warning to close the case. The kindness of my strict father made me miss him forever.
