Evert Willem de Nijs' Obituary
Evert Willem de Nijs May 25, 1926 – September 22, 2017 Evert Willem de Nijs, 91, died peacefully at home in the presence of his loving wife of 65 years, Bernaldine. Evert is survived by his children, Robert de Nijs, Max de Nijs (Cheryl), Irene Atkinson (Tom), Carla de Nijs, and Richard de Nijs (Vicky), nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Marie Van Woesik, his brothers, Jan de Nijs, Paulus de Nijs, Charles de Nijs, and Reinoud de Nijs. He is also survived by his brothers, Flores de Nijs and Leonard de Nijs. Evert was born in Klaten, Indonesia. After the decolonization from the Dutch rule over the East Indies (now Indonesia) he and his wife and three children were displaced to Laren, Netherlands in 1957. After spending four years in Holland with the addition of two more children, the family immigrated to the United States and resided in Northern California. He worked as an Accountant for most of his life, mainly with Consolidated Capital, and spent the last few years as an Assessor with the County of Santa Clara. He volunteered as a tax specialist for the AARP in assisting seniors with their tax returns. He was fully involved with his church, serving as Elder and Deacon for Bethel Presbyterian Church for over 55 years. Evert will be sorely missed by his family he loved, his friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. He will always be remembered for his enormous heart and generosity, as well as his wit, the twinkle in his eye, and his “million dollar” smile.A Celebration of Life will be held at Bethel Presbyterian Church in San Leandro on Saturday, September 30th at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of Evert W. de Nijs can be sent to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 14235 Bancroft Avenue, San Leandro, CA 94578.
