After a tough illness we lost Gino on September 8th 2016. He was surrounded by loved ones. He leaves behind a loving wife, children, grandchildren, sister, in laws, nieces and nephews, friends and coworkers. He is dearly missed. I Read Obituary
Today my wife and I were in Nor Cal saying a final goodbye to a very special person in my life for a very long time! When a man is loved as much as he was he can never really die; it only shows how much he really lived! Rest in peace Gino!!
Gino, you were truly a one of kind man. You were more than just a coach to so many of us, and I will always treasure the wonderful memories I have of you both on and off the field, your laugh, your scruffy voice and mostly your kind, kind heart. You will always hold a special place in my heart, I can only hope my daughters have a coach and friend like you one day!
Bob and I were saddened to hear the news. Meeting Gene at Orkin was one of the best things to happen. Always upbeat and happy. He had a way to make a stressful day more pleasant. Rest in paradise my friend and hugs with the deepest sympathy to Carol and the family. Wendy and Bob Sater
Coach, I hope you know how much of an impact you had on all of our lives. I’m sharing these photos as one of my favorite memories of you. It was my Freshman year at CC and we were playing Dani and her Colorado Buffs so you and Carole came out for the game. I was so nervous but so excited to play in front of you and show you the player you helped me become. After the game you gave me the biggest hug and a big bag of homemade cookies. Just the thing to cure my sadness over losing to your daughter:). Thank you for always being there for us and for teaching us not just the fundamentals of soccer, but also for showing us the fundamentals of how to be good people who care for others and are good sports. We are heartbroken to hear this sad news. While we met and shared so many good times around soccer – Gino was so much more. His lessons and inspirations were life lessons – he led his girls with passion for the game but taught that life is so much more. He stayed above the politics and was always sincere in his love of the girls and not the score. There are so many stories that come to mind about Gino and his great sense of humor and not taking himself too seriously. I remember a beautiful fall weekend and we were all at another away tournament. It was Sunday morning and as the team gathered in the hotel lobby we found Gino and his loyal assistant Dave B. sitting there looking like they had been up all night. Well it turns out that when Gino went to bed he knew he had to do something about the clock and, convinced he was right, he set his clock ahead instead of back. So thinking he was late and that it was 6 am Gino woke Dave and told him to hurry and get ready – well it was actually 4 am. And even after Dave told Gino he was a little early Gino convinced Dave that since we’re up already lets get ready, and so they did. Gino was able to make you smile even at 4 am. After soccer Gino became a friend to my whole family including my late Dad, who called Gino his long lost son. I think this meant a lot to Gino too because in the end family was everything him – he always shared how lucky and blessed he was to have married Carol ( and how she put up with him for so long) – he glowed when he spoke of his great kids and beamed whenever he told stories about his grand kids. I can hear him now on St. Peters team in the sky pleading his case – “Mr. Referee!” We are all better for having known you, we love and will miss you – All the Scottos
For a long period in my younger days Gino was like brother, friend and mentor. Even though we hadn’t spoken in years I thought of him often and fondly. I will miss him forever!! JA
