Edward William ScottEdward William Scott passed away peacefully on June, 17, 2017 in Santa Rosa, CA and joined his beloved wife Betty Scott, who preceded him in death June, 2007. Ed was born on January 27, 1924 to Vivian Pride Scott and Edward Robert Scott in San Leandro, CA. He grew up as a fourth generation Oakland native.Ed attended elementary school in Oakland and from his second floor classroom watched the building of the Golden Gate Bridge. He attended Emeryville High School where he played catcher for the varsity baseball team. After high school Ed continued to play ball on a semi-pro team in the Bay Area. He worked at the Todd Shipyards building Liberty Ships until he enlisted in the U.S. Army, March 1943.Ed reported to Fort Knox Kentucky, the “Home of Armor” and was trained as an armored infantryman with the 526th Armored Infantry Battalion, Company B. The battalion was deployed to Wales. Just days before the D-Day Invasion a single tank crew went ashore at Omaha Beach in an LST to scout the preparedness of the Germans. As part of that crew, Ed rode on the outside of the tank and was the first infantryman to step onto Omaha Beach. The crew took no enemy fire. After being ashore a short time the crew was ordered to reload the LST for quick departure. In late July, 1944 the 526th AIB departed Wales again and landed on Utah Beach. The battalion moved across France and was the first combat force to reach Malmedy, Belgium. They fought in Malmedy and The Battle of the Bulge that very cold winter. Ed drove a half-trac; the primary mode of moving infantry troops. He was discharged in December, 1945.Ed married Betty Baertsch Clark in 1958. They each brought 2 children to the marriage and later had their own daughter, Dorie. They moved to San Lorenzo to raise their family and Ed enjoyed coaching youth baseball with his kids, as well as family outings to the beach, trips to his parents’ cabin at Clear Lake, and camping along the Eel River in the Redwoods. He also enjoyed hunting with his father and friends. He worked for Sanders Glass Co in Oakland as a glazier specializing in the installation of complex store fronts. He was a self-taught locksmith, and after retiring from the glass business, he enjoyed a second career as carpenter, locksmith for the Fremont School District. In retirement, Ed continued his woodworking and won prizes for his birdhouses at the Sonoma County Fair and Foresthill Art Show. He is known for his quick wit and one-liners, and always ready for pie and coffee and a good conversation. He loved anything baseball.Ed is survived by his 5 children, Nancy Scott Huebsch(Bill), Brian Edward Scott(Janice), Dorie Scott Hensley(Bill), Stephen Clark(Bernadette) and Susan Clark Woodward, 9 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.Our family greatly appreciates the 24-hour care provided Ed by the loving staff at The Mystical Rose, RCFE in Santa Rosa the last months of his life.A memorial service will be held for Ed on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 12:30 pm, Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward CA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your favorite Veteran’s Service Organization.
