Dewitt Glasgow's Obituary
Dewitt GlasgowJune 14, 1928 – February 15, 2018 Oliver Dewitt Glasgow, 89, passed away in his Fremont, California home on Thursday, February 15th, with his children by his side. Dewitt was born June 14th, 1928, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He married his wife Mari Hatsuko Matsui on November 29th, 1950 in Tokyo, Japan and they were together for 66 years until her passing on April 21st, 2016. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years beginning in July, 1946 and retired with a rank of Sergeant-Major in June, 1966. Received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland and taught the next 22 years as a high school teacher of history/social studies at Irvington High School, Fremont, California, finally retiring from teaching in June of 1988. Dewitt’s first love was his wife and family, but it didn’t stop there as he constantly gave back to the community and the armed forces in donations and support. Everyone who met Dewitt loved him. He was fluent in the Japanese language and was very, very organized. His love of books was evident from all of the bookshelves filled with a constant exchange of books, old and new. When he retired, he spent time researching genealogy and wrote his book: “The Reynolds Family of Upper Moore County, North Carolina.” This was dedicated to his mother. He loved jigsaw puzzles and we dubbed him the “Jigsaw Puzzle Master” since he completed them so easily. He was also a whiz at solving crosswords. In his spare time, he would tend to his garden, especially tomatoes and roses. There was never enough time to watch all of the movies and TV shows he recorded on VHS tapes, yet the shelves of tapes kept increasing. Playing Mahjong with his wife, daughter and son-in-law was a highlight to his later years, along with re-teaching himself to play the piano and receiving visits from his grand children and great grandchildren. Dewitt is survived by his son Mike, daughter Carole and her husband Glenn, grandchildren: Jason and his wife Amanda, Karen, Jennifer and her husband Joe, and great grandchildren: Aubree and Allison. Dewitt was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mari, his youngest son, Tom, and his grandson, Nick. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held at Dewitt’s home on April 21st in the afternoon from 1:00 to 5:00.
