Dale Spain's Obituary
IN MEMORY OF DALE SPAIN 6/11/1931-10/31/2017LIFETIME MEMBER OF THE CASTRO VALLEY REBELSDale was born in Ames Iowa on June 11, 1931. He was one of 8 children. Dale signed up for the US Navy during the Korean War, where he met the love of his life, Pat Spain while he was recovering from a broken leg at Oak Knoll Navy Hospital in Oakland CA. Pat was there with her sister Lizzie visiting Lizzie’s husband at the hospital. Guess it was meant to be because they quickly fell in love and were married for many years until Patty passed away in 2012. Dale always said she caught him because he had a broken leg and could not run!! They married in May 1953, and soon came their one daughter Martha (Spain) Knox. They moved to Hayward in 1955 when their new little girl was only a few months old. They lived in the same home for all these years!! They joined the Sequoia Squares to learn square dancing and were hooked for life!! When their club folded they joined the Castro Valley Rebels where they danced until the club folded. They really loved Square Dancing and opened a Square Dance Store the Boopsy Daisy in Hayward where they sold everything needed for Square Dancers. They started attending National Square Dance conventions all over the USA with friends Terry and Cricket Mosier (as Terry had become a caller taught by late Jim McDonald along the way) Square Dance Where Magazine was also part of their lives as they took it over when the editor could not longer handle it. Everyone in Square Dancing loved Dale Spain and recognized him from his Rebel hat he always wore!! Dale was loved by all and will be truly missed!! He is survived by his daughter Martha Knox and her husband George Knox, Grandson Ronnie Cole and his wife Carrie and their children Tori and Tyler, and his granddaughter Tammy Cole. He is also survived by his sister Betty Springer and his brother Jim Spain and his wife Judy along with lots of nieces and nephews. Dale was a special man with a heart of gold and he will be sorely missed on this earth but know he’s happy to be back with the love of his life Patty once again!!!
