Cowl K Adachi's Obituary
Cowl Kaoruko Adachi, a resident of Hayward, CA died peacefully on September 6, 2018 after a brief illness. She was 93.Cowl was preceded in death by her parents, Sakichi and Masao Takao, husband, James(Jim) Adachi and brother, Taul Takao, She is survived by her brother , Elihu (Ed) Takao, sister, Kayko (Kay) Iyemura (Tom); two daughters Shari Gee (Ken) of Castro Valley and Tami Adachi (Lee) of Redwood City; one grandson, Matthew Gee and one granddaughter, Caitlyn Gee, sister in law, Doris Takao, brother in law, Akio Adachi (Shin); nieces Laurie Takao Nothoff (Charlie), Renee Seaman (Fred), Karin Iyemura (Dan), Adriane Bates (Eric), and Tracey Okabe-Yamamura (Rodney); nephews Glenn Iyemura (Evangeline), Alan Iyemura, Kenneth Takao (Katie), Robert Adachi, Craig Okabe (Debbie) and Jeff Adachi (Irma).Cowl was born on July 1, 1925 in San Francisco, California. She and her family lived in Alameda until 1942, when Executive order 9066 went into effect. Cowl and her mother, brothers Taul and Ed and sister Kay were interned along with other Japanese Americans at Amache, Granada, Colorado. She was interned at Amache for three years.She met Jim Adachi in 1942 when he visited mutual friends at Amache before leaving to serve in the 442nd Division of the U.S. Army. After her internment Cowl relocated to Detroit, Michigan, where she joined her brother Taul. Cowl and Jim were married on October 3, 1946 in Gross Pointe, Michigan. They returned to the Bay Area to reside in Oakland, California in 1947. After Jim’s death in 1981, Cowl continued to live in their family home in Oakland and moved to Hayward in 2001.Cowl worked at Sobrante Park Elementary and Madison Junior High School in Oakland for 20 years. She was an active member of the San Lorenzo Japanese Christian Church, San Leandro. Her many interests included cooking, drawing, and The Warriors.The family requests that donations be made to the San Lorenzo Japanese Christian Church, The American Cancer Society and The Buena Vista United Methodist Church Alameda.In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held.
