Clarice Barkley's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Clarice Barkley, a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and beloved friend, who left this world peacefully on August 1, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on September 12, 1929, in Stratford, Oklahoma, to William and Viola Elliott, Clarice lived a full and vibrant life that spanned nearly a century, filled with love, laughter, and compassion.
Clarice’s journey began in the heart of Oklahoma, but her spirit soon found its home in California. After completing her education at Bakersfield High School, she embarked on her professional career, starting as an insurance writer before finding her long-term position as a registrar at Tennyson High School. Clarice dedicated many years to serving the educational community and retired in 1992, leaving behind a legacy of support and guidance for countless students.
In 1953, Clarice married Dewey Clifford Barkley, in San Francisco. Together, they built a warm and loving family, and their bond was one of unwavering support and affection. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dewey, but is survived by her three adoring children, Barbara Mazetis, Walter Barkley, and Susan Barkley, who carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. Clarice was also a proud grandmother to Miles Barkley and Jack Barkley, who brought her immense joy and pride.
Clarice was a remarkable woman, known for her great sense of style and her unwavering commitment to her family. She was both honest and trustworthy, embodying the qualities of a good friend. Her family meant everything to her, and she demonstrated that love in countless ways throughout her life.
Her community involvement was significant; she was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and South Hayward United Methodist Church. Clarice’s heart for service extended beyond the church, as she generously volunteered with Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Little League, school activities, and at Kaiser Hospital. Her spirit of generosity touched many lives, and she leaves behind a legacy of kindness and dedication to her community.
In her leisure time, Clarice was an avid traveler, exploring the wonders of Europe, visiting majestic castles, and embarking on adventures to places like China, Australia, and Alaska. A particularly treasured memory was her trip to New Orleans with her sister-in-law, Celine. These experiences were a testament to her zest for life and curiosity about the world around her.
Clarice's life came to a close, but her legacy will continue to live on through her loving family and the many lives she touched.
She is survived by her brother, Elvin Elliott, and her sister, Betsy Piatt, who, along with her children and grandchildren, will forever cherish the memories they created together.
A funeral service to celebrate Clarice's life will be held at the Chapel of the Chimes, located at 32992 Mission Blvd. in Hayward, on August 9, 2025, at 9:00 AM. Friends and family are invited to come together to honor and remember a remarkable woman who will be dearly missed. Clarice Barkley was a beacon of light in the lives of those she loved. Her spirit, kindness, and unwavering love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace.
