Carmen Maria Avelar's Obituary
Carmen M. Avelar, a lifelong Californian and cherished voice in local journalism, passed away peacefully, joining her beloved husband in eternal rest. Born in San Francisco on October 11, 1923, to Spanish immigrant parents, Carmen embodied a legacy of resilience, curiosity, and heartfelt storytelling.
She dedicated 25 years to the Hayward Daily Review, where her words brought clarity, compassion, and insight to readers across the East Bay. Her pen chronicled everyday lives with dignity and warmth, and her commitment to truth and community earned the respect of many.
Carmen’s greatest pride was her family. She leaves behind her devoted children, Diana and Richard, who carry forward her wit, wisdom, and love of language. Her presence will be deeply missed, yet her spirit will linger in the lives she touched and the stories she shared.
A private service will be held to honor her life and legacy.
