Betty Jo Canady's Obituary
On February 15th, 2016, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend Betty Jo Canady passed away from natural causes at her home in Sonora, California. She was 82.Born in Hasty, Arkansas on January 15th, 1934 to Troy and Phyllis Canady, Betty was the eldest of three sisters. She was fiercely devoted to her family, helping to support her parents after her father was injured on the job and unable to work. She retired in 1990 after serving as a school teacher in the Oakland Public Schools system for over thirty-five years. Betty was a proud union member, an unapologetic progressive, and a tremendous lover of animals having cared for one or more pets every day of her life. Since her retirement from Redwood Heights Elementary, she supported dozens of charitable causes including Habitat for Humanity and various Veterans organizations. She was active in the community, working as a docent in Columbia and volunteering her time at the Humane Society thrift store in Sonora. She also was a fervent researcher in documenting her family’s ancestry.Betty was preceded in death by her parents and survived by her sisters Dorothy Cosetto and Sharon Berg, brothers-in-law Dan Cosetto and Lloyd Berg, her nephew Andrew Berg, her nieces Deborah Cosetto, Dee Cosetto, and Amy Berg, her grandnephew Nathan Berg, and grandniece Cassidy Berg.Services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, February 23rd at Chapel of the Chimes in Hayward California. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Betty’s honor to your local Humane Society would be greatly appreciated.
