BESTY ROSS GRANT's Obituary
Betsy Ross GrantJuly 14, 1922 – June 5, 2015Resident of San Leandro, CABetsy passed away at the care facility in San Leandro where she resided. She was born and raised in Akron, Ohio until she was 17. The family moved to Pittsburgh, PA, where Betsy completed her senior year of high school. In 1945, Betsy enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES and served as a hospital corpsman in Bethesda, MD. Following her military career, Betsy returned to school and to study and complete a four-year course at the Pittsburgh, PA Academy of secretarial and accounting classes. In 1955 Betsy became an employee of Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Co. Twenty years later Betsy was given the opportunity to be transferred to California.In 1975 Betsy, with her black poodle Cinder, drove cross-country to Oakland, California and reported for work at the Kaiser headquarters building. December 31, 1984 Betsy officially retired from KACC.Betsy was a very staunch member of the Methodist church. In Pittsburgh, PA she belonged to First United Methodist Church. In Oakland, CA., she became a member of the First United Methodist Church – and then a member of the Lake Merritt United Methodist Church following the merger of First UMC and St. Stephen’s UMC. As a very active member, Betsy participated in the United Methodist Women, the Adult Bible Class, various other major committees of the church, as well as serving on the board of the Oakland Methodist Foundation.Throughout her life, Betsy loved to travel – and did so with very close friends from Pittsburgh. (Her passport was up-to-date!) Her other major interests were reading, music, and many types of puzzles. (She would do the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink.)Betsy was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Daisye Grant, and her beloved brother, Thomas. She is survived by her brother’s three children: Richard of Florida, Thomas of Kentucky, and Marilyn of Arizona. Betsy is buried in Akron, Ohio beside her parents.A memorial service will be held at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church, 1330 Lakeshore Avenue, Oakland, CA., on Sunday July 19, 2015 at 3:00pm. Pastor Pamela Kurtz will preside. A reception will follow the service. No flowers, please. Gifts in memory to your favorite charity are preferred.
