Bertha Bueno's Obituary
BERTHA GILL BUENO Born September 17, 1914; Died March 5, 2008. Our Cherished Mother It is with great sorrow that we, your four children and their spouses, your 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, and all your relatives and friends release you from the hands that held you to this earth. We joyfully accept your prayerful desire to join your beloved husband, Floyd who now welcomes you with open arms and where perfect joy will exist forever. Your life and example has greatly touched every one of us through your love, and there will always remain a deep void in our lives until we can be with you in Heaven. Our love for you will be without end and you will always remain in our hearts. We will miss you greatly. Loving mother, grandma, and great-grandma passed at the age of 93 at home. She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd Bueno, parents Juan Gil Garcia and Brigida Dominquez Cruz Gil of Jaraiz de la Vera, Spain, and her brothers Jesse, Peter, Johnny, and Valence; and her sisters Mary and Josephine. The Catholic family came through Ellis Island in March of 1921. While on Ellis Island, the family’s last name was changed to her father’s middle name and two L’s were used, it was determined Gill was more American. The family was determined to quickly fit it to their new home, so they became fluent in English and learned American customs. From March 21, 1921 to the time of her death, Bertha was a proud lifetime resident of San Leandro. She graduated from San Leandro High School in 1934. Soon afterwards, while serving as the Spanish Club Soccer team’s secretary, she met her husband-to-be, Florentino “Floyd” Bueno. Their first date was at the old Palace Theater where they shared each other’s first kiss. He proposed at the top of the Ferris wheel at the San Leandro Cherry Festival in May of 1935. They were wed six months later in November. For almost 52 years they shared a wonderful life together. She worked alongside her husband from 1954 through 1969 serving the UAW Local 333 for General Motors. She was a firm believer in the union and the benefits it bestowed on its members. Up to the time of her death, she received the health insurance benefits she and her husband fought so valiantly to garner to the union members. Bertha was a dedicated member of the Democratic Party. She volunteered many hours over the years to her the party and was proud of those that served it. Bertha and Floyd produced four wonderful children who survive today, Floyd (Jeannette) Bueno, Ronald (Barbara) Bueno, Beverly (Paul) Stagnaro, and Nancy (Willem) Vanderputten. Bertha was proud of all of her children. She is survived also by 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Her final days were spent at home while a constant vigil of loving family members kept her company. Hasta luego, te queremos.
