Bernice Sarah Desoto Smith, born Tuesday, February 10th, 1931 in Hayward, California; Entered into rest on Tuesday, November 12th, 2013 in Escalon, California. Age 82 years.Survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Linwood Smith; a sister, Ann Kemp; a brother, Ronald DeSoto; by her children, Judy Pierceall McLaughlin and Cindy Holt; by her grandson, Michael J. Walker; by her great-grandchildren, Lucas M. Walker and Joshua H. Walker, and by many uncles, aunts and loved ones.Predeceased by her mother and father, Louis King Desoto and Juana Redulfa Rodrigues (both born in Hawaii); a brother, Louis M. DeSoto; a sister, Margaret Akino.Bernice graduated from Hayward High School; then worked as a nurse and as a medical receptionist; then, in her later years, she became a homemaker. She always put God first in her life, with her family second, and her friends were just like family to her. She loved to be creative, and at one time she made beautiful dolls for sale. When her health got to be too big a burden for her, she retired to her battery-operated wheelchair, with which she ruled the house.Visitation was held on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013, from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life Service from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm, at Chapel of the Chimes Reflection Chapel, 32992 Mission Blvd, Hayward, CA 94544.Entombment was at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park, adjacent to the funeral home.
