Bernie was entered into rest December 19th 2017. He was 100 yrs old.Born on May 20th 1917 to Encarnacion and Antonia Morales in Lyons, Kansas.Was predeceased by his wife Isabel, son Benjamin, daughters Sandra and Laura. Survived by his daughter Rachel, son Ruben (Gloria) Morales.And his present wife Ana Maria. 2 brothers Joe and Alphonso Morales.11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.Historical profile:Bernie was the first Mexican-American to be elected to public office in Alameda County. He was elected to the Union City Council in April 1964, spent two years as a councilman and two terms as mayor.He was past chairman of American G.I. Forum and a member of Mayor’s Conference. He was appointed to the Human Relations Commission of Alameda County. He founded the SASSO (Southern Alameda County Spanish Speaking Organization) and was a member of Commission Honorifica Mexicana, and was vice chairman of the Union City Teen Club. Very instrumental in the forming of the Police Dept., Public Works Dept., He had phenomenal success in his services to Union City. Had numerous other accomplishments during his term of office.
