AWTAR SINGH's Obituary
Our Dadaji
Awtar Singh was born in Village Bombeli in Hoshiarpur District, where he lived his early childhood with his Masi ji. His father Sardar Karam Singh was a Headmaster at the school in their village Chabbewal and mother Dhan Kaur was a housewife.
He went to middle/high school in Chabbewal and studied at Khalsa College in Mahilpur and Mechanical Engg from BITS Pilani . He started his first job as a Mechanical Engineer at Bhakra Dam in Nangal. All his 3 sons Lt. Gen. (Retd) Amarjeet, Kanwaljeet (Electronics
Engineer) and Navjeet (Mechanical Engineer) were born in Nangal. He went to work on Beas Sutlej link
project and Pong Dam Project and then became Chief Engineer of Canals for Punjab Irrigation Department. After retiring from the service he settled in Mohali. After a few years, he moved to California to
be with Kanwaljeet and family.
He was as an eminent engineer and was regarded highly by his contemporaries. He was an expert in heavy steel structures and welding and presented many papers at
national and international fora.
The void he leaves behind is vast. From a humble village boy to the head of Punjab Irrigation, Dadaji inspired multiple generations. We hope his future generations follow his example and excel in their lives.
Gurbani teaches us not to weep over the death of anybody. We should submit to the will of God and pray that the departed soul may rest in peace. Gurbani says people cry not for the dead but how it affects them.
