ARNOLD EBERSTEIN's Obituary
Arnold Eberstein was born on August 01, 1921 in Alameda, California, to Christian Johan Eberstein and Louise Greisinguer Eberstein, the youngest of three children.Arnold grew up in Alameda and graduated from Alameda High School. He worked with his father who was a blacksmith and ship builder, and then as a machinist for Geddco before entering the Navy in 1941 where he served 26 years as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate. During his years of service, in October 04, 1944 he received a citation for meritorious performance of duty as turret gunner of a United States Navy torpedo bomber while engaged against an enemy submarine on August 20, 1944. Arnold, as turret gunner, contributed to the destruction of the enemy by his cooperation while the pilot concentrated on the impending attack. His attack vigilance increased the effectiveness of the all-around search for U-boats. Arnold’s visual observations were invaluable to the pilot in assisting him to evaluate the submarine’s actions, and the effectiveness of his tactics. Without the assistance furnished by Arnold’s instinctive, meritorious performance of the many duties, a successful attack, representing the utmost of teamwork and coordination among all members of the crew of the attacking plane, could not have developed. Arnold performed many of these type missions during World War II.Arnold also worked and retired from the Hayward School District as a maintenance worker in 1984.Arnold had such a gift of loving to build things, repair cars, do home maintenance, and to machine projects. He was an all-around “fix-it” man!!Arnold and his wife, Vera Eberstein, moved their family to Pleasanton, California, in 1954 where his family lived until 1976. In 1961, Arnold and Vera divorced.Arnold remarried Lillian Souza Eberstein in 1968, and they were married for 41 years.
