Antonio Blas Calvo
June 11, 1929 to August 1, 2021
Antonio Blas Calvo was born in 1929 in Hagatna, Guam, and on
August 1st, 2021, he quietly passed away at the age of 92. He was
predeceased by his wife Francisca, his parents and siblings. He
leaves behind a brother, sisters and several children, grand, great
and great-great grandchildren.
As a young boy, Tony loved farming and throughout his life, worked
many colorful jobs in Guam and California. He loved building
things, raising animals, planting crops and sharing his love of the
land with his family.
Tony then married Francisca, and together they raised their
children and instilled the values of their Catholic faith. They spent
most of their time together among friends and family. He always felt
a strong sense of responsibility to help family. His sister Juanita
recalls that, “he and Kai were always there for us when we needed
them.”
The most important job for him was mentoring youth, helping them
to find purpose and economic opportunity. With the Government of
Guam, he ran the Job Corps, an apprenticeship program to teach
young adults workplace skills.
Outside of work, he also had a passion for baseball. He was
instrumental in establishing a Youth Baseball League. He helped
organize a cultural exchange program between Guam and Japan.
Tony was also a member of the Guam Elks Lodge, he loved the
brotherhood and purpose that the Elk’s provided during his time.
With his family, he instilled the value of hard work and taking pride
in doing a good job. He tried to teach his children about living off
the land. He was a hard worker, tough and determined.
