Alfred John Pascual's Obituary
Alfred John Pascual, age 85, died peacefully in his home with his wife at his side on January 4, 2017. He was born January 16, 1931 in Kansas City, Missouri to parents Alfredo Pascual and Violet Cameron. At a young age, the family relocated to the Philippines where he father originated. Right before the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Islands, his mother and siblings were able to escape but he and his father remained behind. Al was sent to a civilian detention center at Santo Tomás University in Manila. Later he joined the Fil-American Irregular Troops to fight the Japanese in the jungles of the Philippines. At the time, he was 14 years old. He was a 1949 graduate of San Jose High School in San Jose, CA, where he was very active in sports. He ran track and played football, basketball and baseball. While a student at San Jose State University, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country from 1951-1954. During his service, he trained to be a Medical Laboratory Technologist and worked at Tripler Army Medical Hospital in Honolulu, HI where he met his future wife, Dorothy Estrella. After his discharge from the Army, Al returned to California, and he and Dorothy were married on October 23,1954 in Alameda, CA. He worked as the Laboratory Manager for St. Rose Hospital from the day it opened in 1962 until he retired in 1991. Al earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 1983. After retirement, he worked in real estate. Al was a lifelong Catholic who was very active in parish life. He served as President of the St. Bede Men’s Club, Chairman of the Annual Church Festival for 20 years, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Choir Director, and Establishing Member of the Parish Council. Music was a big part of Al’s life. He enjoyed planning the weekly music for Mass, singing, playing the guitar, and attending musicals and concerts. Al had a great love of sports. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed watching sports on TV. He loved his Oakland A’s, Oakland Raiders and Golden State Warriors and enjoyed attending games with his family. Al and Dorothy traveled often to Hawaii and enjoyed many cruises. In 2005, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren on a memorable Mediterranean cruise and trip to the Vatican. Al valued his family and spent most of his life guiding and advising his children and many grandchildren. He had a great sense of humor and loving nature. He will be greatly missed by all. Al is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Estrella Pascual; Daughters: Ruth Pascual Borquez of Mt. Washington, KY; Judy Riches of Northridge, CA; Susan Von Tersch of Milpitas, CA; Teresa McClusky of Milton, GA and Linda Burch of Bend, OR; Brothers: Richard Pascual of Moorpark, CA; David Pascual of Elk Grove, CA; Sister: Ruby Payne of Tucson, AZ; 15 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfredo Juan Pascual, of Manila, Philippines and Violet Cameron Kimble of San Jose, California. Visitation will be Thursday, January 12, 2017, from 5pm-9pm with a Rosary at 6:30pm at Chapel of the Chimes Funeral Home, 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward, CA. The Funeral Mass will be Friday, January 13, 2017, at 11am at St. Bede Church, 26950 Patrick Ave, Hayward, CA with burial immediately following at Chapel of the Chimes Cemetery. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Al’s life.
