Abelardo “Abel” D. Ignacio passed away peacefully on July 26, 2016, surrounded by his family and close friends.Abel was born and raised in Tondo, Manila, Philippines on Dec 31, 1931.At a young age, he found his calling as a member of the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) in the Locale Congregation of Tayuman in Manila; where he became acquainted with Bro. Felix and Bro. Erano Manalo. Before and after worship service and even after school, Abel would spend most of his time at the nearby carinderia (local eatery) in hopes to be noticed by is future wife, Irene. After a year of courtship, Abel and Irene married on November 26, 1955. Abel was a hard worker taking on various jobs to make ends meet for his wife and four children, until he found a stable job as a payroll clerk in Manila City Hall.In March of 1985 Abelardo and his wife, Irene, migrated from the Philippines to California in hopes to fulfill the American Dream. He found a night job at the Daily Review handling and organizing newspapers. Aside from work, he spent most of his days dedicated to his duty as a deacon in the Local Congregations of Fremont and Oakland – this was his pride and joy. During his days off, he would venture to the Oakland & Chabot flea market or organize his unique coin and church pin collection. His favorite past times were completing crossword puzzles, watching the Oakland A’s, cheering on the Golden State Warriors and catching up on his favorite Filipino drama series. Even after having his first stroke in October 2000, he still continued pursuing his hobbies and tried his best to spend time with his family, despite his declining physical condition.Abel is survived by his half brother Benjamin, his wife of 60 years, Irene, his son Manny, and his three daughters: Ester, Nancy, & Leony and sons-in-law Jun Reyes, Bong Teodosio and daughter-in-law Merce. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Elvin, Jay, BA, Angelica, CJ, Kram, Xam & Dave, and two great-grandchildren: Caroline & Norah.Abel was known to be a vivacious soul making friends everywhere he went and bringing joy and laughter to his loved ones constantly. He was mostly known for surprising Irene with hugs and kisses in the kitchen. Abel will be surely missed and always remembered for his warm heart and loving spirit.
