What Our History Means for You

The City of Hayward was incorporated in 1876, but Chapel of the Chimes Hayward has been serving this community since 1872. Having been here for every turn and through every social and economic shift, our roots are deep — and our commitment to providing exceptional service to the people of the East Bay area is enduring.

The diverse population of this area has experienced many changes in the past 145 years. Founded by William Dutton Hayward, who came west from New England during the gold rush, the town of Hayward was initially little more than a hotel, a small dairy operation and a store that Hayward built on a piece of ranch land he’d purchased from Guillermo Castro.

The town grew steadily throughout the 19th century, taking advantage of local natural resources. In addition to growing tomatoes, potatoes, peaches, cherries and apricots, locals also raised chickens and pigeons and developed salt evaporation ponds on the Hayward shore of the bay.

All this hard work and ingenuity paid off, and in 1929 a bridge was built to connect Hayward to the San Francisco peninsula. The city continued to thrive and was home to industry, agriculture, and even movie-star cowboys. The Harry Rowell Rodeo Ranch drew in Western actors from all over during the 1930s, including the legendary Slim Pickens. This vibrant community has come a long way since then, and the demographics have changed with the times. Today, people from many different nations, cultures and faiths call Hayward home.

Chapel of the Chimes Hayward has flourished along with the city. From a modest seven-acre memorial park, we’ve grown into a 61-acre cemetery, mausoleum, crematorium, columbarium and funeral home complex, known for sweeping views of the Bay Area and stunning pastoral scenery. Some of the most notable pioneers of the area have been laid to rest here, and we’re proud to accommodate diverse needs with sensitivity in what is the oldest and largest full-service facility in the East Bay. Our longevity in the community has allowed us to earn a reputation for integrity and exceptional service so that you can trust us with the care of your loved one.

We are proud of our history and deeply invested in this vibrant community and its people. We’re also forward thinking, continuing to grow and change to meet diverse needs.   We love to meet our neighbors, so come by for a tour of our facilities or just enjoy the natural beauty of our grounds.
