John Henry Franklin, Jr. was born June 23, 1942 in New Orleans, Louisiana to his parents, John Henry and Elouise Franklin He has one sister, Mary Louise Armstrong. His mother was the choir director and his father was a deacon at Rose Hill Baptist Church in New Orleans where John started church at a very early age. He was baptized at age 11 years after the passing of his father.
He attended McDonald 36 Elementary School and Carter G. Woodson Junior High School. He graduated from Walter L. Cohen High school in June 1960. In July 1960 he joined the US Air Force. He trained at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas and later was stationed at Beale Air Force Base in Marysville, CA. In 1962 he returned to New Orleans and married his high school sweetheart, Lillie Penn. From this union they had two children, John Henry Franklin III (Hank) and Deana Andrea Xryztion (Dee Dee). After discharge from the service in 1965 John was employed at Hunter’s Point Shipyard in San Francisco he later transferred to Mare Island Shipyard. In 1995 he retired after 35 years of federal service. He returned to the work force in 1997 with MV Transportation as safety supervisor.
After His discharge from the Air Force the family lived in Berkeley and Oakland and finally settling in Hayward, California. He attended Merritt College and California State Hayward.
The family joined Palma Ceia Baptist Church in Hayward in 1984 under the leadership of Pastor Charles Franklin Bennett. He was a member of the male choir and senior counselor of the Royal Ambassadors. He was also a member of the Brotherhood. He became a deacon in 2009.
John is survived by his children, John and Deana (Sacramento), his sister, Mary Armstrong, nephew, Arnold Armstrong, aunts, Millie Armstrong, (New Orleans), Matt and Ann Armstrong (Cleveland) and numerous cousins and friends.
